JUST A LITTLE LESS OBVOIUS
i confess, tonight i'm dressed up in gold
My mother was a complete and total crack head. In fact, she over-dosed on ice just a few days after I was born. I was born addicted to methamphetamine, but I guess it never really got me down. Luckily, my mom's sister, Trisha Kennedy, had her head on straight. She was married to a super guy named Brock, and they were very eager to take me in, despite having just had a child of their own less than a month before I came into the picture. Austin was his name, just a couple weeks older than me. We were best friends from the time we were small, even closer than most siblings. He was my best friend and my support and pretty much just my everything, and to this day, I still call him my brother, even though, technically, we're only step-siblings and cousins.
Austin and I were two when Rosie came along. She was a cute bubbling, bouncing little redhead. Trish and Brock lived in Kentucky, and so I was more or less raised here, and amongst horses. Uncle Brock worked as a trainer for one of the top barns around, and Aunt Trish managed their breeding barn. As a result, all three of us kids, that is, me and Austin and Rosie, have been riding practically since before we could walk, and I couldn't imagine anything I would rather do. However, I was never into the racing side of things as much. I dabbled in western, but I guess you could say I found my "calling" in the realm of three day eventing. When I started getting into that, my aunt and uncle were super supportive and tracked down an old three day eventing mare by the name of Snowdance who taught me the ropes as far as what I was doing when it came to jumping and Dressage. She's in her twenties now, but I'll still take her out on a hack every now and then.
Regardless, except for my humble beginnings, my life has been extremely uneventful. I went through school easily enough. Austin and I were always in the same grade, and, with a lot of the same interests, we often shared classes as well, which was just fine by the two of us. I bought Tempest in a Teakettle when I was sixteen. She was just a three year old at the time, but it was one of those things where we just clicked. I've been working on finishing her since then, and we're about ready to start really competing.
I had talked about coming to Gemara since I was a freshman, but the money finally came in and things just sort of worked out that I'm finally able to attend, and I am so excited to be here.

Sadie smiled a bit as she watched her husband move about the kitchen with confidence. She loved that he was comfortable in this environment. She knew some guys hardly darkened the doors of a kitchen, unless they were eating. Sadie was a bit of a traditionalist, feeling that the woman should generally do the work in the kitchen, but then, they weren't exactly most people, and she wasn't just a stay at home wife. And so it had come that they pretty much shared any and all chores, including kitchen work, and she had found that it worked. Their's was an easy, comfortable relationship, regardless of what they were doing.
She nodded a little absently when he said the fence was fixed. That had been on the to-do list for a good long while, and they just hadn't been able to find the time to do it until today. "That's good. I got a call about another couple of horses, so we should maybe kick a few of them out for the time being," she said, mostly just musing aloud as she thought the logistics through in her head, figuring out where everyone would go. She glanced up as his hand settled on top of hers, his voice sounding a little hesitant. She pulled her hand out from under his, gently tracing one of the cuts on his hand, her touch feather light, hardly there, as a small smile touched her lips. "I am exhausted" she agreed with a humorless chuckle.
She nodded when he suggested she get the movie and popcorn going. She moved about the kitchen, grabbing a bag of microwave popcorn from the itty bitty pantry and throwing it in the microwave, before wandering over to stand behind Toby, slipping her arms around his stomach, resting her cheek against his back, just enjoying the contact. Sadie was a hopeless snuggle bug, when you got right down to it. The girl just loved to cuddle and generally be close to people.
When the microwave pinged, she slid her hands around his stomach, like she was reluctant to leave, and then went about grabbing a bowl and dumping the bag's contents. Leaving the bowl, she made her way into the tiny living room, kneeling in front of the entertainment center to shuffle through the movies. "Tobe, do you know where...oh, never mind" she called, laughing a little at herself as she found the DVD and pulled it out. Indeed, it hadn't even been unwrapped yet, and so she set about pulling the pesky plastic off, and then the stupid tape thing across the top. She hated the way they packaged DVDs. Seriously, you'd think the things were the crown jewels instead of a little round plastic disk. Good grief.
She slid the movie in, grabbing the remote and skipping to the top menu, bypassing the previews entirely, before making her way out to the kitchen, grabbing the bowl of popcorn as Tobey finished up the dishes. Sadie flopped down on the couch, and a moment later, Tobey was doing the same. They simultaneously moved closer to each other, drawing a slight chuckle from Sadie's pale lips as he settled his arm around her shoulders and she tucked herself into the space, nestling against his side.
In all truth, it didn't take them long to finish off the popcorn, and then Tobey was sprawling across the couch, his head in her lap. She ran her hands through his slightly shaggy hair. She supposed, if he kept to his normal pattern, that he was about due in for another hair cut. She giggled, glancing down at him as he kissed the sensitive flesh at the bottom of her stomach. "Down in front" she hissed, like she was at a theater. "You're distracting me!" She nodded toward the TV. The kisses and the laughing had brought a blush to her cheeks, and she was rather the picture of happiness in that moment, curled up on the couch with her husband, enjoying a quiet night to themselves. What could be better?
